Living and Doing Business behind a Levee

Flood Season (Typically April 1 through July 1)

Because of the snowmelt in the Upper Missouri River Basin and Spring rainfall, April, May, and June are the most favorable months for flooding conditions on the Missouri River.  The North Kansas City Levee Unit protects portions of North Kansas City and Kansas City, Missouri, from these occasional high water events.

Flash flooding along the Hillside Levee (which runs from North Kansas City Hospital, past Macken Park, and the Kansas City, Missouri water treatment plant) can occur almost anytime.  The most significant risk is from severe thunderstorms between March and November.  These storms produce intense rainfall that falls on both sides of the levee, and shallow flooding has been known to occur inside the levee.

The levee system was designed to pass the 0.2 percent annual chance of occurrence (500-year) flood event in the Missouri River. The District strives to maintain the system to the highest standards to minimize the risk of flooding.  Those living within the protected area should understand that the risk of flooding can never be eliminated.  For this reason, the District encourages everyone who lives or works within the protected area to understand the risks to property and personal safety should flooding occur.  For that purpose, we have posted the following resources:
